O'Neil eyes Nugent arrival

Gary O'Neil believes David Nugent's capture would be a major coup for Portsmouth.

Nugent is now in talks with the South Coast club after initially holding talks with newly-promoted Sunderland.

O'Neil knows Nugent from their time together with England's Under 21s and the midfielder would love to see Pompey bag the striker.

"I know him quite well from some of the Under 21 games," O'Neil told Sky Sports News. "He's a really good lad.

"If we can get him it'll show just how far the club has come, because there are some decent clubs in for him.

"Natural goalscorers seem to score at every level so hopefully he'll be able to do the same."

Meanwhile, Pompey keeper David James has echoed Sol Campbell's comments by saying the club need to bolster their strike force.

"There's no individual area which was costly for us not qualifying for Europe, other than perhaps away from home," said James.

"We did score goals at crucial times, but I think more consistency over the course of the season with a 15 to 20-goal man would be nice."
